Amy Figueroa navigates the complex legal landscape of Smolen & Roytman as expertly as she dominates a kitchen (cooking being her favorite pastime). She gathers the ingredients (typically of the Mexican variety), then chops and dices and minces until she makes enough to feed her parents and three siblings. From there, she dives right in and doesn’t second guess herself or her abilities—all while achieving a laser-focused attention to detail.
High-Stakes Portfolio
As the paralegal to partner Oleg Roytman, Figueroa juggles a lot of balls—sometimes working on up to 400 cases throughout her portfolio. “I do a little bit of everything,” she explains. “I work on calendaring, monitoring all statutes of limitations, ensuring that workers’ compensation claims are filed on time and staying on top of medical records.”
Unlike the civil rights cases Dan Smolen typically handles, Figueroa and Roytman primarily cover personal injury, semi, auto, motorcycle and pedestrian accidents and insurance bad faith and fraud issues. “It’s truly never a boring day here,” she says. “And there’s so much room to grow in this space.”
Chemistry in Collaboration
Fortunately for Figueroa, Roytman dedicates ample time to nurturing emerging talent. So much so that Figueroa credits part of her success to their professional chemistry and the generosity of the team during her training period. “I came to work with Oleg at a pivotal time in his life when he was building up his practice and showing me what he wanted it to look like,” she says. “Now, we know each other so well that he’ll tell you that I can read his mind.”
A Path Reimagined
A self-described “very private person with a loud personality,” Figueroa initially set her sights on a career in commercial aviation, only to table that professional aspiration due to geographic and mathematics requirements. “It’s a very cool field,” explains Figueroa, who loves travel. “But my strong suit has always been reading and writing, and law is a much better area for that type of skill set.”
Passport to Adventure
Figueroa spends weekends scouring Pinterest and TikTok for new recipes to try and researching potential vacation spots. With its relaxed pace of life, farmers’ markets and access to artisans and crafts, Majorca takes the travel prize thus far. “It’s like the U.S. but more luxurious,” explains Figueroa, who enjoys hitting the road with extended family.
Embracing Roots and Inspiring Others
The Tulsa native also enjoys nurturing her Latin roots closer to home. “A lot of people from diverse backgrounds are afraid to come into the legal space, but I want them to know how much room there is for growth,” she says. "If they’re on the outside looking in, they’ll see that I have a success story and that they can too.” Figueroa knows a good recipe when she sees one.
